Goddess Katyayani
Goddess Katyayani is the sixth form of Goddess Durga celebrated during Navratri festival. She is the main goddess worshiped on the 6th day. Goddess Katyayani is seated on a lion and has four arms. The upper left hand holds a sword while the lower left hand holds a lotus flower. The upper right hand is in Abhaya mudra while the lower right hand is in Varamudra. Worshiping Goddess Katyayani is believed to bring prosperity to the devotee in both material and spiritual realms. Goddess Katyayani is believed to rule over the Agya Chakra. The Agya chakra is located in the middle of the head between the eyebrows and is also called the third eye chakra. It is related to perception, discernment and intuition. Awakening this chakra helps one to rise above the material world and attain higher levels of consciousness. Goddess Katyayani also destroys the sins accumulated from previous lives and helps in timely marriage of the individual. Goddess Katyayani took the form to kill Mahishasura, the demon who wreaked havoc in the universe, following the request of the gods as well as Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. She was born as the daughter of sage Katyayan, who was doing penance to please Goddess Durga and gave birth to her as his daughter. Goddess Katyayani is usually depicted wearing a yellow dress, though devotees worship orange on this day.
Goddess Katyayani Mantra
Mantra is the reproduction of vibrations in the form of sounds, whose repeated chanting can unlock the powers that elevate one’s body, mind and spirit. Chanting a mantra for a specific number of times during specific periods can help a person receive blessings from the divine beings to whom the mantra is addressed. It can also reduce the effects of negative energies resulting in a boost in morale. The mantra should be chanted correctly and with devotion. For the chanting of the mantra to be effective, one has to sit at a suitable place at a suitable place. He has to stay focused with a clear mind. Goddess Katyayani Worship Rituals
On the sixth day of Navratri, wake up early in the morning and take a bath. Then clean the place where the worship is to be done. Keep an idol or picture of Goddess Katyayani and do self worship. Apply tilak on the forehead. Take some water in your palm and drink it. Chant the Mantra:
Keshavaya Namah Narayanaya Namah Madhavaya Namah Govindaya Namah
Then take water in your hand and ask for a vow. Worship Goddess Katyayani. Then offer some fresh flowers to the goddess. Wash the idol with water. If it’s a picture, clean it up. Then light a lamp in front of him. With flowers in hand, bow to Goddess Katyayani and meditate for some time. After this, worship the goddess with incense sticks and lamps. Offering honey to Goddess Katyayani and taking some honey as prasad is auspicious during Navratri.
Devi Katyayani Story
The story of Goddess Katyayani is of defeating and killing the demon Mahishasura. For doing this she is often referred to as Mahishasura Mardini. Like all other goddesses, Goddess Katyayani is also a form of Goddess Shakti. There lived a sage named Katyayan. He was a great devotee of Goddess Shakti. It was sage Katyayan’s greatest wish that Goddess Shakti should produce him as her daughter. Meanwhile, at another place, Raja Rambha, the lord of the Asuras, was infatuated with the princess Mahishi, who was cursed to be a buffalo. As a result of their union, the demon Mahishasura was born. Due to the special circumstances surrounding his birth, Mahishasura was able to exist as a buffalo and an asura. Mahishasura did severe penance to please Lord Brahma. He had a boon from Brahma that no human or animal could kill him. After receiving the boon, Mahishasura wreaked havoc on all the worlds of death and destruction. Desperate gods sought recluse from Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Trimurti concentrated her powers on Goddess Shakti and thus Goddess Katyayani took the form. She was born in the house of sage Katyayan who was doing penance to get Goddess Shakti as a daughter. Being the daughter of Katyayana, she was named Katyayani. Goddess Katyayani grew up to be a beautiful woman. One day the guards of Mahishasura saw Goddess Katyayani. They thought that she would make a good pair for Mahishasura. That’s all he told Mahishasura. Mahishasura sent a proposal through his guards to get the beautiful Katyayani. Goddess Katyayani laughs at the offer, saying that if Mahishasura can defeat him in battle, he can achieve it. In Mahishasura the sage was only happy to oblige. A fierce battle ensued. It culminated in Goddess Katyayani slaying the demon. Since then she came to be known as Mahishasura Mardini.
Goddess Katyayani Significance
Goddess Katyayani destroys negativities in oneself and helps one to enjoy purity and bliss. Worshiping her helps in overcoming the feeling of guilt and shame and makes one at ease with oneself. A person can reconnect with his inner child through the worship of Goddess Katyayani. This makes a person happy in life, cheerful mood and smile more often. Devotees of Goddess Katyayani get their material desires washed away from their soul by their karmic sins. They are blessed with childlike innocence and pure devotion. In the Bhagavata Purana, it is mentioned that the Gopis of Gokul observed a fast in the month of Margashirsha and worshiped Goddess Katyayani to have Lord Krishna as their husband. It is still celebrated by girls to find a suitable life partner. It is believed that the virgin goddess Kanyakumari is an incarnation of Goddess Katyayani. Worshiping Goddess Katyayani, as the ruler of the Agya Chakra, allows the devotee to open his inner third eye and see things that are incomprehensible to the human eye. It can transform a person’s abilities from worldly to divine.
