Happy 2022 Birthday to the great Ogden Nasho, a master of whimsical verse
by Robert Wilkinson
Today would have been the 120th birthday of one of America’s great poets, and was that funny!
Ogden Nash (August 19, 1902 – May 19, 1971) was exceptionally popular when I was young because of his “light verses” that were witty, witty, and sometimes very sharp. He wrote for children and adults, and was on the staff of the new Yorker For many years, and generally beloved by millions. Here are some short poems. At the end I’ve included a link to a site with countless poems by the master of this eccentric humor.
family Court
would be in a lesser danger
by a stranger
If one’s own relatives and relatives
It was more fun being together.
open road song
i guess i’ll never see
A billboard as cute as a tree.
Maybe till the billboards fall,
I will never see a tree.

candy is dandy
but the wine is quick
germs
A mighty creature is the germ,
Although smaller than a pachyderm.
their customary place of residence
Deep within the human race.
his childish pride he often pleases
By giving people strange diseases.
Do you, my poppet, feel weak?
You probably have a germ.
i didn’t go to church today
I didn’t go to church today
I believe the Lord will understand.
The surf was rolling blue and white,
Children swinging on the sand.
He knows, he knows how brief my stay is,
How brief is this period of the summer season,
He knows when I’m done and done
We will have a lot of time together.

I give you Professor Twist now,
an honest scientist,
The trustees said, “He never tangles!”
and sent him to distant forests.
Camped on the banks of a tropical river,
One day he remembered his beloved bride.
He, the guide informed him later,
The crocodile ate it.
Professor Twist could do nothing but smile.
“You mean,” he said, “a crocodile.”
Here is the site where I found it. There’s more, so by all means, have some fun perusing Ogden Nash’s wit and wit!

Thank you for making me smile so much when I was little. Through you I learned that poetry can be light and fun.
