What is Adi Pooram?
Adi Pooram is an important festival for Tamils. they . celebrate the birthday of goddess andali this day. She was an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi, the wife of Lord Vishnu. The festival is held during the month of Aadi (July-August). Pooram is one of them 27 constellations or stars. This year Aadi Pooram is on Monday, August 1, 2022.
Adi Pooram festival is also associated with Goddess Shakti, It is the day of Valaikapu (baby bath) for Goddess Parvati. Devotees believe that on this day the goddess comes to earth to bless her devotees.
Priests offer special prayers and aarti to the goddess in Shiva temples Adi Pooram, They also offer glass bangles to the goddess, which are later offered as prasad to the women devotees who visit the temples on this day. It is believed that women who wear these bangles are blessed with children. Pregnant women who wear it can have a safe delivery as the goddess protects the child from evil forces.
The story of Andal is known to all Tamils. His love and devotion (devotion) for Lord Ranganatha (a form of Vishnu) is the stuff of legend.
Who was Andal?
Andal was an incarnation of Bhuma Devi, the second wife of Vishnu. He incarnated on the day of Aadi Pooram. Hence this day is celebrated as the birthday of Shri Andal. Periyalvar, who was one of the 12 Vaishnava sages, found him as a child in a Tulsi garden at Srivilliputhur and adopted him. He named him Kothai.
Andal’s love for Vishnu
Even in childhood, she was very devoted to Vishnu. It was she who used to garland flowers for Vishnu. But before giving the garland to her father, she used to put it on and looked at herself in the mirror. After this she will hand over the garland to her father. His father did not know that he was wearing a garland.
One day, he caught her in this act and got very upset. In devotional practice, man was not allowed to wear a garland made for God. And Andal knew this too. He scolded his daughter and took a fresh garland to the temple. But Vishnu refused to accept it. That night he came in a dream and said periyalwar That he would accept only Andal’s rosary.
When Andal attained womanhood, Periyalvar arranged for her marriage. But she was adamant that she would marry Lord Ranganatha of Sri Rangam only. This got him worried. Lord Vishnu again came in her dream and asked her to bring Andal to Sri Rangam so that he could marry her. They were married on the day of Panguni Uthiram.
Rituals during Adi Pooram:
On this day the women of the house get up early and decorate their house beautifully with Rangoli/Kolam. Goddess Andal loves lotus flower, red color and kalakandu rice. The women also prepare an elaborate meal which they offer to the goddess.

Adi Pooram festival
Most of the Vishnu temples in Tamil Nadu have grand celebrations during Adi Pooram. A very elaborate celebration is held on the occasion at the Devi Andal temple at ‘Srivalliputtur’, as Andal was born at this place. It is a 12-day long festival here. Adi Pooram Srirangam is also a major event at Sri Ranganatha Temple. Here it lasts for ten days.
The marriage of Lord Ranganatha and Andal or ‘Thirukalyanam’ is held with much pomp and pomp on the last day of the festival. It is believed that unmarried girls who worship Goddess Andal on the last day, they soon get married. If Aadi Pooram falls on a Friday, it is even more auspicious, and the festivities will be more elaborate and there will be many rituals.
An elaborate feast is also offered to the goddess. Every household in the society contributes in this. There is special Adi Pooram Puja and Archana for Andal. In Vishnu temples also, glass bangles are given to women devotees as prasad.
Special rituals are performed to the accompaniment of traditional music, and the festivities continue till late into the night. After the aarti, food is served to the devotees. Devotees also recite ‘Thiruppavai’ and ‘Lalita Sahasranama’. some Vishnu Temple, Thirukalyan Urchavam is performed. People make a sweet dish, kalakandu sadham (sweet rice made from crystallized sugar), and offer it to the goddess.
