I Met Peace Pilgrim and Astrology

This is the peace pilgrim. She began walking in 1953, and continued to walk until her death in 1981 to promote her cause of world peace. He is twenty eight years old.

She walked more than 25,000 miles in the US and Canada and said she would eat when someone offered her food and would sleep on her bed.

Henry admired him. He really respected her, so when she passed by our town, it was a big event. Plans were made to meet him and shake hands with him.

The day has come. I was about seven years old, and we drove from the desert to the city and stood by the side of the road in the hot sun to wait for him to come up the hill. We were going to intercept him.

Twenty minutes passed and he didn’t show up. Henry was in agony that she must have passed and we would miss her, but then she came into sight. I don’t think I’ve ever seen my grandfather so overwhelmed with emotion. She was his pope.

“There she is! There she is!” he said, excitedly.

I must say, she was awesome. She really looked like a vision. She was a moving force and was moving fast along the way. She wasn’t kidding about walking down the street.

Henry had a bottle of water, and I had three bananas. She stopped, nodded at us and said “good day”. He took a water bottle from her and drank from it before giving it back. I handed him the bananas and he tore one and gave them back. “That’s a lot, baby. Peace,” she said.

She left at the same speed, waving one hand, but there was no looking back. I watched him walk away, stunned and mesmerized, reading on the back of his shirt, “10,000 miles to peace”.

Henry said, “She’s a wonderful woman, walking like that.”

We got in the truck and went home.

Here is a quote from an interview with Shanti Pilgrim regarding astrology:

Q: How old are you?

A: Many people on my pilgrimage route asked my age. I told him that I did not know my age and did not intend to find out. I know my date of birth. It lives on the edge of my memory, but I won’t reveal it. What purpose will it serve? Many have even tried to guess my old name. The most interesting guess was that I am Amelia Earhart. I am very grateful that age has gone out of my mind now. By the time I counted birthdays and started thinking about growing up, I was getting old. Age is a state of mind, and I consider myself to be young. And this is my advice to others. Get as old as you can and then stop producing age.

I never give my money either. Do you honestly think I could be pushed around by a planet? Good sky, your divine nature is always free—it is only your self-centred nature that is not free. I have two reasons for not giving my sign. One is that an enterprising astrologer can work out my horoscope, and what a waste of time that would be. And if I had known the time of my birth, I would have been as tempted by birthday cards as I am now filled with Christmas cards, and I would have to take two weeks off each year to answer them.

Shanti Pilgrim was born on July 18, 1908 with a stellium in Cancer.
