June 17~24
Summer Solstice at Stonehenge
keep my feet on the ground
my head can touch the sky
can i see clearly
can i hear
may i be free to touch
my words are true
keep my heart and mind open
my hands be empty to fill the need
keep my arms open to others
may my gifts be revealed to me
so i can return what i’ve been given
Completing the great circle.

With the turn of the solar year, we have 4 important cardinal corners marking the arrival of the seasons of the year. These quarters of the year have been celebrated for centuries, and are marked by ancient harvest and earth festivals that bind us together with each other in a respectful and sacred dance from the earth.
The solstice on June 21st (or the 20th depending on where you live) is one of these 4 magic corners of the year. One of the longest days in the Northern Hemisphere (and the shortest in the South), it is a day of strength and initiation. Fruit is on the vine here in the north, the days are warm, and we celebrate the fruits of nature’s generosity. Remembered at sunrise by the Hell-Stone of Stonehenge, Midsummer has been celebrated for centuries by lighting bonfires to ward off evil, and to welcome in prosperity and fertility for the summer months to come.
It is when the Sun enters Cancer, the second cardinal sign of the astrological year, a time in which we honor our roots, our heritage, our mothers, our homes, our motherland, our ancestors and the roots of our existence. . Ruled by the Moon, the sign of Cancer is associated with the sea, emotions, empathy, caring, sentimentality as well as our emotional foundations like family, community and what brings us a sense of belonging.
In the hustle and bustle of the outer world, we tend to overlook the importance of our inner emotional, spiritual and psychological worlds. It is also the place of our imagination, our dreams, our daydreams and ideals. We ignore these, not realizing that our physical health and well-being also depend on our inner well-being.
Like an anchor in a storm, our emotional foundation binds us to a place of safety and security that we trust will not budge, no matter what happens, wherever we are. Cancer is mainly concerned with the past, with the family, with our heritage. It is also about connecting with our deepest emotional roots, be it our common bonds, our sense of belonging, our sense of identity….
So we’d like to stop and think for a moment: Where do I go when I need that help and protection? On whom and on whom can I depend to be there? What changes do I need to make to promote or maintain greater safety and security in my life and in my community?
When the Sun enters Cancer the entry chart sets the tone for the next quarter of the year, emphasizing the things that support us and make us feel secure. This can include things like the housing market, agriculture, the sustainability of communities and the foundation of our lives. With the Moon and Jupiter squares in fiery Aries in this chart, the current trajectory seems unstable if things stay as they are at presentAnd some sort of change is necessary to restore that stability.
Aries is an active sign of initiative and action that compels communities and individuals to take some sort of action, which will help restore order, and return us to a state of greater stability. Much of this is being done by Venus, Pallas and Uranus at the North Node in Taurus, a sign of financial security, as well as Saturn being squared. This forecasts a continuation of the long Uranus-in-Taurus volatility of the global economy this year. All these conflicting sections indicate the need for some sort of change or adjustment to get us back on track.
LithaHere in the north, the karka solstice and mid summer were honored in ancient times with fire and drums and festivities. Even as late as the 18th century, bonfires were lit in the hills and countryside of England. And so let us also dedicate to the Sun Gods, dance and pay homage to the Lord of Light at this magical time of year. And do so to gain the right guidance and conditions necessary for the global security and stability of our communities, homes and families.
