June’s Rare Planet Alignment, 2022

Look at the sky! I

Set your alarm clocks. You’ll have a reason to wake up early this month, as the sky is making a rare spectacle just before sunrise. Throughout the month of June, we’ll be able to see Five Of the planets closest to the naked eye: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Not only that, they will line up in planetary order (aka according to their distance from the Sun).

A cosmic chorus line like this is very rare – the last time it happened in December of 2004 – and we won’t get another chance until 2040.

when is it happening I

You will have the chance to see the planets throughout the month, but the best time will be in the early hours. June 24, The decreasing moon around this day will make it easier to find those who roam on other planets. This would be a gift, as planets are often difficult to see with the naked eye. When a planet travels near the Sun – from our point of view on Earth – our central star swallows up their light. (Think that Icarus is surfing very close to the Sun’s rays.)

why it matters II

Conditions are special in June. The planets will be far enough from Sol that we can see each of them in their own glory, but close enough that we can actually see them. It is a coincidence that the planets decide to arrange themselves in order, but their formation serves as a helpful diagram when it comes to traditional astrology. These five planets (along with the Sun and Moon) are the seven bodies that we focus on in traditional frameworks, such as planetary rule.

Before there were astrology apps, before there were sun-sign memes, there was just the night (or early-morning) sky. This June, it’s almost as if we time-travel to the experience of ancient astrologers. It’s kind of a memory. A return to that age-old wonder of the universe. A proper meeting with the planets, without the mediator of a screen. This is an opportunity to personally greet the planets once in 18 years. Opportunity to rise.

What to do I

  • Find out what time the sunrise is in your location and set your alarm 30 minutes earlier.
  • If the horizon is clear, you should be able to see the planets without binoculars or binoculars, although it may help to get up as high as possible (think: terrace or balcony).
  • See each planet in its own light. After all, it’s not every day that we see planets “in the wild,” off our screens and astro memes.
  • Considering that astrology is a system that was created through our visual connection to the planets and the sky – pay attention to the properties of each planetary body and consider how they might relate to their meaning.
