Secret of Dasha Timing: Getting It Right – Applied Vedic Astrology
Eye on Astrology: Correcting Dashas
When we learn astrology, we have to learn the basics but as we become more experienced, we realize that the depth of the Vedic astrological ocean is sometimes unfathomable and it takes too deep a dive to fix it. Have to put
Take for example the Vimshottari Dasha. The rules are complicated but many customers are frustrated because it doesn’t always work out well. , Why is it like this? Ancient scriptures tell us that if the Moon is in the 2nd or 6th house then we should calculate the initial dasha from the fourth nakshatra from the moon to get the initial dasha. This is called Keshama Vimshottari Dasha and it means if you are born with Moon in second house in Ashwini, instead of starting your life from Ketu Kaal, you will start it in 4 Nakshatras or Rohini or Chandra Kaal . This will toggle all your statuses.
If you have Moon in 8th or 12th house, the classic text tells you to calculate the starting dasa for Moon in Ashwini from 8 nakshatras from the Moon. Your initial dasa in 8th house would be Pushya or Shani. This is called Adhana Vimshottari Dasha.
If you have Moon in your 3rd or 11th house, then you should calculate the starting dasha from the 5th Nakshatra from the Moon of your birth. So if your Moon is in Ashwini Nakshatra, you will count 5 Nakshatras and your initial dasha period will be the period of Mrigashira or Mars.
Dasha Kaal appears in sequence from the correct starting point i.e. Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Venus and Ketu.
Hence, 1/2 of the people will have moon in 2, 6 or 3, 11 or 8, 12 and hence their manifest dasha period will be different as compared to having moon in 1, 4, 7, 10, 5. , or the 9th is where the regular Vimshottari dasha works.
Some scholars believe that the toggled starting point is especially important if you have a cluster of planets in your centre, i.e. 1, 4, 7, 10 from your Moon.
In practice, I see that this new calculation is working much better. I had a client with Moon in 8th and he was in period of Mercury in regular Vimshottari dasha and exalted Mercury in 3rd and everyone told him that business would be great. By proper calculations, he was in Shani/Ketu which is one of the toughest phases of his life and in the last one year everything had gone haywire which you can expect from that combination.
Lately I try to use 4-5 dasha systems to get the predictions correct and see how they match and I’m trying to figure out Narayan dasha, Charan dasha, proper Vimshottari dasha and special dashas for some charts. I use it when Sun is in 1st or 10th position in Rahu. , I feel it is much easier to predict now whereas the plain old Vinshottari dasha is always pulling teeth. Parashar tells us that Vinshottai Dasha is the king and should work but it is a stretch at times.
